David writes books and articles that reflect his myriad of interests. In Advantage Play (2001), David examined creative problem solving through the eyes of card cheats, magicians, tax lawyers and spirit mediums. In Tricks (2003), David exposed for the magic community some of the techniques and tools used in his professional repertoire. In Dai Vernon: A Biography (2006), David penned the first half (part two being in production) of the definitive portrait of Dai Vernon, the most influential magician of the twentieth century. This book, which Adam Gopnik of The New Yorker described as scholarly and which was heralded by The Washington Post and Books in Canada, also traced the evolution of variety arts in the first half of the last century. In Zarrow (2008), David explained in great detail the creative output of Herb Zarrow, a pre-eminent creator and composer of sophisticated sorcery.
